Bloomberg’s recent article highlights Iran’s crackdown, threatening protesters with the death penalty. (Bloomberg, 2026). While undeniably horrific, this condemnation often lacks critical context. There's a curious silence from the same outlets when Saudi Arabia executes hundreds, including juveniles and protesters, (Amnesty International, 2022) or when US allies utilize anti-terror laws to

suppress dissent, often with US-supplied equipment. The narrative consistently positions 'our' allies as defenders of freedom, even when their human rights records are equally grim. One might wonder at the timing of such selective outrage. Does it coincide with calls for more sanctions, perhaps, or a new round of 'containment' strategies? It appears the outrage meter of mainstream media

recalibrates based on whether the villain also sells us oil, buys our weapons, or serves a convenient geopolitical objective. Freedom, it seems, is a luxury only afforded to those opposing Washington's designated adversaries.
