Both Democratic and Republican administrations have continually leaned into border militarization, expanding lucrative contracts for corporations
like GEO Group and CoreCivic, whose stock prices often correlate with increased detentions and deportations. These corporate beneficiaries, along with defense contractors who pivot nicely to 'border security' tech, funnel millions into lobbying efforts for stricter enforcement, not humane reform. So, while the bishops offer moral clarity, Washington offers contractors more billions to build walls,
deploy drones, and process human beings through a dehumanizing system. One might wonder if the 'indiscriminate' nature of these policies is less about oversight and more about expanding a profitable industry. How many more 'rare statements' will it take before the political will shifts from enforcement to empathy, or at least away from corporate profits?
