Newsweek's 2018 report on ICE raids in Charlotte under the Trump administration details the arrest of 'dozens' of undocumented immigrants. This narrative, focusing on enforcement spectacle, conveniently omits the bipartisan tradition of aggressive immigration tactics. Remember the Obama administration, which controversially deported more immigrants than any previous president, earning him the
moniker 'Deporter-in-Chief'? (Pew Research Center, 2016). It appears the definition of 'crisis' shifts with each new Oval Office resident. So, the 'rule of law' is invoked, but only when politically expedient. One might wonder why there isn't similar urgency to enforce sanctions on corporations exploiting undocumented labor or halt the spiraling costs of endless wars. Perhaps the migrant's
precarious existence is simply easier to pin on them than to reform a broken system—or, worse, acknowledge the role of U.S. foreign policy in creating refugee crises in the first place.
