The DHS and CBP just announced a whopping $4.5 billion in contracts to continue building the border wall, an initiative that never truly stopped under the Biden administration despite election rhetoric. (Remember that 'no more walls' promise?) This comes as Americans grapple with crumbling infrastructure, underfunded schools, and a spiraling housing crisis. Yet, our government finds billions to
militarize a border while simultaneously approving billions in aid for walls and military action overseas including to the Netanyahu government, which has received over $3 billion in U.S. military aid annually, even as it constructs separation barriers and expands settlements. One might wonder: are these walls about national security or corporate profits for specific defense contractors? The same
companies profiting from border walls in Arizona are often implicated in projects abroad, creating a perpetual demand for 'security' solutions. Meanwhile, the actual humanitarian crises at the border, often driven by U.S. foreign policy or climate change, remain unaddressed. It seems taxpayer dollars are always available for physical barriers, just not for human dignity.
