BBC Discovers Sanctions Have Consequences... In Iran
The BBC breathlessly covers Iranian protests after the rial hit a 'record low against the US dollar.' This framing, typical of outlets reporting on nations targeted by Western foreign policy, presents the economic collapse as an organic, internal failing. It omits that the US, under successive administrations, has imposed crippling sanctions designed to inflict maximum economic pain on Iran (see:
Executive Order 13876, 2019; JCPOA withdrawal, 2018). These aren't 'economic conditions,' they're acts of economic warfare. One might wonder if the BBC would cover the financial instability of, say, Canada, without mentioning a decade of punitive sanctions by its largest trading partner.
