Twenty-two Palestinians were killed in Gaza, according to the BBC, after an 'armed terrorist' allegedly crossed a 'yellow line' and fired at soldiers. This framing neatly sidesteps the consistent pattern: every act of Palestinian resistance, however small, is met with overwhelming, disproportionate violence against a besieged civilian population. The 'yellow line' in question, the Gaza fence, is a
symbol of a 17-year blockade turning Gaza into an open-air prison (B'Tselem, 2023). One might recall similar narratives preceding the 2014 Gaza war, where alleged Hamas rocket fire (often in response to Israeli incursions or assassinations) led to operations killing over 2,200 Palestinians, including 500 children (UN OCHA, 2014). It seems the media narrative toolkit offers limited options: either
'terrorist provocation' or 'Hamas human shields.' Never, it seems, is the death of 22 people simply a humanitarian catastrophe.
