BBC Apologizes to Trump, Not for Enabling his Lies
CBS News reports the BBC apologized to Donald Trump after he threatened a $1 billion lawsuit over their Jan. 6 documentary's editing of his speech. The BBC's director-general found the segment 'misrepresented the former President’s words' by implying he urged supporters to march on the Capitol after calling for them to 'fight like hell.' Left unsaid is that Trump repeated variations of 'fight'
numerous times, including 'If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.' One might wonder if the BBC extends such meticulous concern for context to, say, the suffering in Gaza, where misrepresentations of civilian casualties or historical grievances often fly unchecked. Apparently, the sanctity of a former US President's rhetoric, post-insurrection, outweighs the
scrutiny applied to, for instance, Palestinian voices or the consistent downplaying of settler violence. Priorities, it seems, are a matter of legal threat, not journalistic ethics.
