Austria's 'Freedom' Includes Banning School Hijabs for Girls
The New Arab reports Austria's conservative government passed a law banning headscarves for girls under 14. This move, framed by the ruling coalition as protecting 'freedom' and combating 'political Islam', conveniently ignores the freedom of religious expression for a minority population. Similar to France's 2004 ban on religious symbols, these policies often disproportionately target Muslim
women and girls, rebranding state-mandated secularism as liberation. Funny how 'freedom' often looks a lot like state control when it comes to Muslim women's bodies. While European leaders pontificate on human rights abroad, their own domestic policies undermine the very principles of religious freedom and individual autonomy. The irony is as thick as the rhetoric: ostensibly 'protecting' young
girls by denying them the right to dress according to their faith, all under the guise of an 'objective' European identity. How many layers of 'protection' until it just becomes targeted suppression?
