Australia's Climate Warning: 2005 Edition (Still No Action)
Mainstream outlets like The Guardian are now breathlessly reporting on a 2005 cabinet paper where then-Environment Minister Alexander Downer warned of 'dire climate change outcomes.' (According to The Guardian World). One might wonder why this 'revelation' is news in 2026. Was anyone truly surprised that scientists knew about climate change in 2005—or 1995, or 1985? This isn't a new discovery;
it's a media performance. The real story isn't that ministers were warned, but that successive governments, including many of the same politicians and parties, chose to actively ignore those warnings for two decades, prioritizing fossil fuel interests over planetary survival. How many dire predictions does it take for a government (and the media covering it) to demand actual systemic change,
instead of performing shock at old documents?
