Australia Cracks Down On Free Speech After... 'Terror Attack'?
The Guardian reports that groups including 'Jews Against the Occupation ‘48' and 'Palestine Action Group' are challenging new NSW laws that restrict protest for up to three months after a 'terrorist incident.' These laws, enacted after the December Bondi attack, are framed as enhancing security. (Because silencing dissent always makes a populace feel safer, right?) Funny how 'terrorist incidents'
can so rapidly morph into justifications for silencing protests, especially those critical of state actions (or inactions) in matters of international 'conflict.' It appears the 'freedom to communicate on government and political matters' only applies when it doesn't inconvenience the establishment. One might wonder whose 'security' these laws truly protect when the public's right to assemble and
speak is the first casualty.
