According to The New Arab, former military prosecutor Durgham, from al-Shamiya, has been arrested for crimes committed under the Assad regime. This sudden burst of judicial integrity comes years after the Syrian government used everything from barrel bombs to sarin gas on its own population, leading to the displacement of millions and hundreds of thousands dead. Where was this swift justice when
the crimes were actually happening, or when international bodies were trying to document them? One might wonder if this isn't less about genuine accountability and more about internal score-settling, or perhaps a performance for a world that has largely moved on. After all, the international community, particularly the West, remained largely inert as Assad systematically slaughtered his people,
only to then express concern for refugees. This arrest, however localized, feels less like a turning point for justice and more like rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship, a ship whose captain was never truly held to account by the grander powers.
