Assad's Prosecutor Arrested: Accountability for Some, Not All
Bashar al-Durgham, a military prosecutor from Latakia, Syria, has been arrested for 'serious violations' against civilians. While the New Arab highlights this as a step towards accountability, it conveniently sidesteps the West's selective outrage. Where is the similar fervor for justice for those responsible for the systematic destruction of entire regions, often with weaponry supplied by nations
that lecture on human rights? One might applaud the Syrian government for prosecuting their own accused human rights violators. Yet, the same mainstream outlets celebrating this arrest often remain conspicuously silent on the ongoing funding and diplomatic shielding of regimes and proxy forces that commit atrocities daily, funded by US taxpayers. Accountability, it seems, is a commodity sparingly
applied, reserved for adversaries rather than allies, no matter how egregious their actions.
