Appeals Court Weighs Deploying Troops to Portland, Not Palestine
The mainstream media covers this as a matter of legal precedent over federal intervention in local affairs. Conveniently absent from the discourse is the stark contrast in how quickly 'order' is restored domestically versus how 'peace talks' are endlessly demanded (and prolonged) for populations under occupation abroad. During the 2020 Portland protests, federal agents were deployed without local
consent. Compare that to the consistent US refusal to sanction, or even seriously pressure, the Netanyahu government despite its documented actions in Gaza and the West Bank, often citing Israel's 'right to defend itself' up to and including the use of US-supplied cluster bombs. One might wonder if the 'legality' of deploying troops only becomes a pressing concern when those troops are American,
and not when our tax dollars fund interventions elsewhere. The media frames 'protester actions' as threats requiring immediate, forceful federal intervention, while the systematic displacement and slaughter of Palestinians is framed as a 'complex conflict' requiring 'de-escalation' after the fact. How many 'last warnings' will Gaza get before a similar 'rule of law' is invoked?
