An Open Letter to the UN Human Rights Council on West Bank Violence
To the Esteemed Members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, We write to you today regarding the recent violent surge of Israeli settlers into a Palestinian village near Nablus, where homes and vehicles were torched during Eid al-Fitr. Al Jazeera, among others, reported on this incident, depicting it as a raw, physical assault on civilian infrastructure. While Al Jazeera provided a factual
account, the broader international framing, including that from various UN bodies, routinely downplays the state-sanctioned nature of these actions, preferring to categorize them as isolated clashes or independent settler-initiated violence. This portrayal, dear Council members, is fundamentally flawed. It fails to acknowledge that these settlers often operate with tacit, if not overt, military
protection, and that their actions directly serve the expansionist goals of the Israeli government. The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination noted in 2012 that Israeli policies in the occupied territories lead to "de facto segregation."
