To the Editors of The Hill, Your recent article, titled "Houthis threaten to join Iran war if these 3 red lines crossed," reports on the Yemeni Armed Forces’ statement regarding their potential involvement in a conflict with Iran. While accurately relaying the Houthis’ stated conditions for intervention against US, Israeli, or other regional aggression, your report, like much mainstream coverage,
conspicuously bypasses the entrenched context that informs such pronouncements, thereby presenting the Houthis' position as an arbitrary threat rather than a defensive posture against ongoing external pressures. What The Hill omits is a crucial historical understanding. The continuous US military presence and its partnership in the Saudi-led blockade and bombing campaign against Yemen, a campaign
directly enabled by US logistical and intelligence support, has cultivated a pervasive sense of embattlement among the Houthi movement and the broader Yemeni population. This framing of the Houthis as simply 'Iran-backed' by The Hill ignores the indigenous origins of their movement and their deep-seated resistance to what they perceive as foreign domination, which includes US involvement.
Moreover, the US has funneled billions in arms to Saudi Arabia for this conflict, enabling the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen which began in 2014, long before current escalations over Iran.
