Amnesty Warns on Fossil Fuels, Forgets the Fueling of War
Amnesty International has, according to Al Jazeera, issued a dire warning about the world's "fossil fuel obsession" threatening billions of lives. A noble cause, to be sure. Yet, one might wonder why Amnesty, much like mainstream media, finds it harder to condemn the petrodollar-fueled arsenal raining down on Gaza as a rather immediate threat to human rights. While lamenting future climate
catastrophe, the present humanitarian cataclysm, funded by US aid and enabled by Western political will, somehow gets less traction. Consider President Biden, who mourned Israeli deaths on October 7th, then approved sending cluster munitions to Israel, a decision facilitating widespread and immediate human rights violations, arguably enabled by a fossil fuel-driven military-industrial complex. How
many critical human rights reports does it take to acknowledge that some lives are being threatened right now, directly by state-sponsored violence?
