When Al Jazeera asks how Palestinians are ending up in South Africa, it's a bit like asking how mice 'voluntarily' leave a burning building. Gaza, for years, has been an open-air prison under blockade, its residents denied basic freedoms and resources. The "voluntary" nature of this departure is thinly veiled euphemism for ethnic cleansing, a polite term for a population forced from their homes by
violence and an untenable future. This isn't an isolated incident; it's a pattern. From the Nakba in 1948, which saw hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced, to ongoing demolitions and land seizures, forced displacement is a recurring theme. The question isn't 'how voluntary' it is; it's why conditions are so deplorable that fleeing to another continent, away from ancestral lands, becomes
the only palatable option. Perhaps the media could occasionally question the conditions of imprisonment, rather than the psychology of the escapee.
