Al Jazeera Reports Climate Protests, Forgets Its Owners Exploit Oil & Gas
Al Jazeera's latest gallery piece spotlights thousands marching for climate justice at COP30 in Brazil, demanding a fossil fuel phase-out and justice for affected communities. A noble cause, indeed. Yet, Al Jazeera Media Network is owned by the Qatari government, a state whose economy is overwhelmingly reliant on natural gas and oil exports. Qatar is literally one of the world's largest exporters
of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with state-owned QatarEnergy driving expansion projects. So, while Al Jazeera’s cameras capture activists pleading for an end to fossil fuels, the entire financial engine behind the network is fueled by the very industry these activists are fighting. One might wonder if climate justice extends to holding one's own funders accountable, or if that's a bridge too far
for 'independent' journalism.
