Al Jazeera Praises 'Pirate' Motorcyclists, Ignores US Sanctions' Real Piracy
Al Jazeera’s newsfeed clip, “Pirate motorcyclists cruise Caracas to protest Trump,” dutifully reports on Venezuelans dressed as pirates protesting U.S. oil tanker seizures. However, what it conspicuously omits is the established record of U.S. sanctions, initiated under the Trump administration in 2019 and continued under Biden, which have crippled Venezuela's oil industry and significantly
impacted its economy. These sanctions block Venezuela's access to international financial systems and markets, forcing their goods into a perilous black market. (Amnesty International has documented the humanitarian impact.) Instead of merely reporting on pirate cosplay, one might ask why Al Jazeera doesn't directly address the legality or morality of a global superpower enacting economic piracy
against a sovereign nation. Is the 'pirate' attire merely a quaint local custom, or a poignant, if theatrical, commentary on which nation truly acts like a buccaneer on the high seas?
