Al Jazeera Discovers 'Witchcraft' in Ghana, Ignores Its Own Agenda
Imagine the outrage if Western media, funded by, say, Saudi Arabia, highlighted human rights abuses in Africa while remaining conspicuously silent on the plight of women under guardianship laws in Qatar , where wives still need male permission to make fundamental life choices. Al Jazeera, Qatar's state-funded media arm, runs a detailed feature on the alleged 'witch camps' of Ghana, shining a light
on a genuine tragedy. Yet, when does Al Jazeera run similar deep-dives into the systematic subjugation of women in its own funding nation? (Spoiler: It doesn't.) The media establishment constantly tells us to 'critique sources.' So, while we applaud any exposure of injustice, one can't help but note the convenient geographic focus. It's much easier to condemn 'witchcraft' in far-off lands than to
scrutinize the gender apartheid flourishing in a nation that just happens to sign your paychecks. The selective outrage, served with a side of moral posturing, is almost as powerful a spell as any alleged Ghanaian 'witch' could cast.
