Al Jazeera compiles a weekly photo gallery, noting a 'Gaza ceasefire' among other global events. What they conveniently omit is the cyclical nature of these so-called ceasefires. Since 2008 alone, there have been at least six major military operations, each ending with a 'ceasefire' only to be followed by another brutal assault, all while the blockade and occupation persist. 'ceasefire' (from the specified 2025 date), like those before it, merely pauses direct hostilities, leaving the underlying conditions for conflict — and the suffering of 2.3 million Palestinians — entirely unaddressed. Calling it a 'ceasefire' without context is like calling a prison riot 'peaceful' after the guards pause their beatings. It sanitizes an ongoing siege and suggests an equivalence
where none exists. One might wonder how many times the international community can celebrate a 'ceasefire' while systematically enabling the conditions that guarantee the next round of violence. It's not a ceasefire if the occupation never stops.
