ABC News Finds Victims, Forgets Causes of Desperation
The tragic deaths of 14 migrants off Turkey's coast are presented by ABC as a regrettable maritime incident. This narrative carefully skirts the obvious: people don't risk their lives on flimsy dinghies unless their homes offer only certain death or utter destitution. Where are these migrants from? What role do Western foreign policies, proxy wars, and economic exploitation play in destabilizing
their nations, rendering them uninhabitable? These are facts conspicuously absent from the headline-grabbing 'tragedy.' We are told to mourn the nameless dead, but never to question the powerful actors, including our own governments, whose actions create these endless tides of desperation. It's easier to lament the outcome than to examine the geopolitical chess games that force mothers and fathers
onto overloaded boats. One might charitably call it selective reporting; less charitably, it's a deliberate erasure of culpability.
