ABC News, citing a rights group, expresses concern over a 'failure to deliver justice' after sectarian killings in Sweida, Syria. This narrative neatly sidesteps the elephant in the room: the extensive, documented history of external powers, including the United States, funnelling weapons and funds into various Syrian factions. According to public records from the U.S. State Department and
numerous investigative reports, the U.S. and its allies armed and trained numerous non-state actors, contributing to the very instability that fuels sectarian violence. One might wonder if the 'justice' they seek would also apply to the architects of this proxy war. It’s a classic framing: lament the symptoms while ignoring the cause. The Syrian conflict, which began as internal protests, was
systematically internationalized and weaponized, leading to the collapse of state authority in many areas and empowering sectarian militias. To now feign surprise at sectarian killings and lament a lack of 'justice' without acknowledging the immense foreign contribution to the breakdown of civil order is, frankly, disingenuous. Perhaps the 'rights group' should question the arms dealers and
foreign intelligence agencies that turned Syria into a sectarian battleground in the first place.
