ABC News Discovers Violence in Darfur, Forgets About Gaza
ABC News dutifully reports on the dire situation in Sudan's Darfur region, where aid workers fear for those missing after paramilitary forces seized a city. A genuine humanitarian crisis, to be sure. Yet, one might wonder why the 'fears' of aid workers in Gaza, where over 200 aid workers have been killed since October 7th , are often framed as unfortunate collateral damage by these same outlets,
rather than an urgent catastrophe demanding immediate action. The media's selective outrage is a masterclass in narrative control. While violence in Darfur is rightly condemned as an atrocity, the systemic destruction and displacement in Gaza—labeled as plausible genocide by the ICJ—is often softened with passive language like 'conflict' or 'Israeli military operations.' One has to ask: Does the
ABC newsroom have a pre-approved list of regions where 'fear for the missing' is acceptable, and another where 'concern for Palestinian lives' is to be downplayed?
